Assessment plays a critical role in the teaching and learning process. Through the use of diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments, instruction is more efficiently focused to benefit student learning and promote their achievement.

With a standards-based curriculum in place, the teacher uses diagnostic assessments to determine where to begin instruction for the student. In addition to these diagnostic assessments, the teacher uses a variety of formative assessments to determine the degree to which students are grasping the skills and concepts taught each day in the classroom. These are often “quick and easy” daily checks to determine if the student “gets it” or needs additional instructional support. Finally, there are summative assessments designed to determine if the student has mastered the standard(s). These are the assessments that most think of as traditional tests and include mid-terms, final exams, state and national testing. We think of these assessments as “game day” performances, the point at which students are expected to use all that they have learned to demonstrate proficiency.

Teaching, Learning, and Assessment all work together and contribute to the rich learning experience that the students of Wissahickon enjoy each day in their classrooms.

In our effort to monitor our students’ progress in meeting the Pennsylvania Academic and Core Standards and to evaluate the effectiveness of our programs, we employ a variety of assessment measures.
